Preventative Dentistry

Preventative Dentistry is focused on the prevention of dental disease, inclusive of gums and teeth. Prevention starts at home but continues with the dental team to promote and maintain oral health. Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental issues from arising down the track.

At Lockleys Dental we believe that regular check-ups are important, for this reason we send our patient recall and reminders when they are due for their dental examinations, to ensure they keep up to date. The frequency of each patients dental examination is determined on an individual basis and the focus is to help each patient maintain a healthy, functioning mouth.

Preventative Dentistry encompasses all treatment to achieve disease free, healthy teeth. It is an accepted and scientifically proven fact that a health mouth is fundamental to general health and overall wellbeing. At Lockleys Dental, our aim is to work with you to establish and maintain a healthy mouth for life.

Children’s Dentistry

Here at Lockleys Dental we believe in starting dental education at a young age. We recommend that you bring your children to see us when they reach 3 years old. This ensures the best possible outcome of your children’s teeth as they learn habits of good dental hygiene at a young age.

Our Oral Health Therapist is part of our comprehensive approach to dentistry for children. She works together with the dentist to ensure optimum dental health for children and adults alike. This preventative care will reduce the risk of future oral health issues and educate you and your child on the beneficial oral hygiene practices. As part of our compressive approach to dentistry we provide this service to all children under 18 and provide hygiene treatment for our adult patients.

Smile Makeover

Cosmetic dentistry has progressed significantly and allows smile improvements through the use of aesthetic materials and innovative techniques. A beautiful smile enhances your confidence and opportunities in life, and there are numerous options available to consider in order to achieve this

Extraction

There are certain time when we can not save teeth and they need to be extracted. This can be due to:

  •  Extensive tooth damage
  •  Severe gun disease
  •  Split or cracked teeth
  •  As part of orthodontic Management
  •  Non-functional teeth
Some teeth are relatively easy to remove while others can be extremely difficult.Extraction can be performed under normal local anesthetic, under oral sedation or under conscious intravenous sedation

Root Canal Treatment

The aim of root canal treatment (or endodontic treatment) is to save a tooth which has had the nerve (pulp) damaged by decay or injury.

Root canal treatment is possible in situations where the tooth can be eventually restored and returned to normal function. In some situations, however, root canal treatment is not an option and the tooth needs to be extracted.

Fillings

A dental filling is placed to close a hole in a tooth, or to repair a fractured tooth and restore it back to its natural form and function.

When a tooth has decayed, the dentist cleans out the decay and creates a hole which is then plugged using a dental filling material.

There are various filling materials which can be used:

  • Resin (white filling material)
  • Amalgam (silver filling material)
  • Gold
  • Porcelain

  • Sometimes, when the decay is deep or there has been tooth fracture, it can harm the nerve of the tooth. Despite the dentist’s best efforts, the nerve can die after a filling is done. This all depends on the health of the nerve initially, the patient’s age and other attributing factors.

    Emergencies

We make time for you when you need an emergency appointment. At Lockleys Dental we always allocate time for emergency dental care. This means that we don’t overbook so we can always accommodate you if you’ve been in a dental emergency. Please call at 9am to secure an emergency spot for that day.

    Dental Implants

A Dental Implant is a permanent, artificial tooth that is used to replace a missing tooth.

Dental Implants are the closest possible replacement to natural teeth. They look, feel and function just like natural teeth. They allow you to speak and eat with comfort and confidence and are generally a better alternative to dentures or bridges.

Since dental implants into the jaw-bone, they prevent bone loss and gum recession that normally accompanies the loss of a tooth.

Generally, implant placement has two phases:

    1. Once the suitability of the patient has been assessed, a titanium screw is inserted in the jaw bone. A healing period follows whereby the titanium screw and bone integrate or fuse. This can vary from 3 – 12 months

    2. After the healing phase, a permanent tooth coloured crown is fitted.

Implants can last many years, however the maintenance of good oral hygiene and regular professional reviews and care are critical for long term success.

    Sports guard

Damaged or knocked out teeth, broken jaws and cut lips can be sustained when playing sport. Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard helps to absorb and spread the impact of a blow to your face, which might otherwise result in an injury to your teeth, mouth or jaw.

Custom-fitted mouthguards are only made by your dentist, who takes an impression and creates a plaster model of the teeth. Custom-fitting allows your dentist to accurately design and provide the best fitting mouthguard that is most appropriate.

A customized sports guard will be:

      • Comfortable
      • Well-fitting
      • Won’t shift or fall out
      • Won’t restrict your breathing

    Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition which causes interruption to breathing during the night. This causes the person to choke or gasp for air, however, as they are asleep, they are totally unaware. When awake however, they may complain of tiredness, daytime sleepiness and poor concentration. One means of treating snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnoea is through the use of an oral appliance. This is a safe, effective and painless option. The oral appliances are custom made and are designed to fit in the mouth to prevent the airways from collapsing during sleep.
